Choosing the Right Transportation Service

There are so many transportation businesses that offer safe and reliable transportation. It is essential to do some preliminary research when selecting a reputable transportation company. We won't dive into driving statistics here, however accidents happen and even if a company does everything they possibly can to avoid these situations, they still occur. What's important is determining what transportation services stand out from the rest when it comes to being ready and prepared for the unexpected.

Lets take a look at what you should know BEFORE hiring a contract driver or using a transportation service.

Local Licensing

Every state and/or local municipality has its own set of rules and regulations when it comes to private pay passenger transportation. All transportation companies should be locally licensed. (the business and/or its drivers) This information should also not be hard to find. Many companies provide this information somewhere on their website and it is also normally available through your state's local public transportation organization.

In addition to making sure a company is licensed, check to ensure it is up to date! For instance here in MD, passenger for hire services (like us!) are required to have each vehicle pass a state inspection once a year AND each driver needs to hold a valid public service license with the Department of Transportation (in addition to their normal driver's license)

Customer Satisfaction How long has the transportation company been in business? Are there credible reviews you can find or complaints filed with the BBB? Find out what others have to say regarding their experiences. Nowadays customers write reviews on just about anything! Vehicle cleanliness, covid-19 procedures, timeliness, and professionalism are common topics customers like to discuss. Yes, some reviews are doctored but this isn't the only parameter you'll use when trying to locate the right transportation service (well, we hope not!). Insurance Coverage This is something that would be a "no brainer", but it is not worth the risk of not looking into this. Transportation companies have insurance guidelines and are normally mandated by each state's Department of Transportation. It is important to note that a commercial auto policy is not the same as the insurance you use to drive your personal vehicle. We won't go into the specific differences in this post, but make sure the company you hire has a commercial auto policy that covers you and your loved ones in the event something goes wrong! Quality Control Call the company and ask questions! Arrange some time to visit their office or a tour of the vehicle you will be riding in. Do their vehicles have first aid kits accessible to passengers? Are exits and emergency doors/windows clearly marked? Are their drivers CPR/First Aid certified? What about fire extinguishers? Ask the company if they can refer you to someone that has used them in the past. If you are greeted with a sense of hesitancy or you have doubts, then it is best to move on to the next option. Any company not willing to work with a potential customer isn't a good practice and is a sign to run the other way!
